The Top Five Myths About VoIP Call Quality, Part Two: Extra Bandwidth Is a Cure-All

Jun 29, 2016

NW bandwidth, globeWe’ve all been there: One minute, your VoIP phone system is running smoothly, and the next you can barely understand what the person on the other end is saying.

In this series, we’re focusing on what not to do when you run into VoIP quality issues. As we discussed in part one, there are many myths related to VoIP call quality that can lead you in the wrong direction—adding extra time and money to the resolution process, without addressing the root cause of the problem.

Let’s focus on myth no. 2: You can “throw bandwidth” at the network, and all of your VoIP problems will magically go away.

What’s the problem with this strategy? Think of a highway littered with large potholes that are slowing down traffic and causing accidents. You can’t just keep adding lanes without fixing the potholes, as cars will still have trouble moving down the road.

Adding extra bandwidth to your network in hopes of solving your VoIP quality issues is like adding extra lanes to the highway. It doesn’t matter if you are using 10 Meg or 10Gig Ethernet, as packets will still continue to get dropped along the way and hence, call quality will continue to suffer. You will simply waste money on extra bandwidth!

We’re here to say, hold your bandwidth and take a holistic approach. Networks are massive and complicated entities. Packet loss can take place over any link or device, for a variety of reasons. For example, you may have a cable on 10Gig link that is curved too tightly and is dropping packets. There could be an issue with your firewall or router. Or, you may have QoS configuration issues that need to be addressed. The possibilities are endless.

Here’s a better way to solve the problem: Use PathSolutions’ TotalView VoIP root-cause troubleshooting solution.
