Supporting the Sea Turtles—Timmy the Turtle’s Plight is Imaginary, but the Dangers Sea Turtles Face are Very Real

Feb 10, 2015

logo Sea Turtle ConservancyLast year, we unveiled our “Don’t Turtle Your Network” campaign featuring Timmy the Turtle (yes, we named him). You may have heard of the silent threat of turtling a network which is very similar to what happens when a turtle gets flipped on its back. While the turtle may think that everything is okay, its demise may be imminent if it’s unable to right itself. The same can be said for network and telecom folks: While the network may appear to be working properly, it is actually rife with problems and there are a lot of unhappy users. Hence the slogan: “Don’t turtle your network.”

Of course, the plight of our turtle, Timmy, is imaginary. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the sea turtle population as nearly all species of sea turtles are classified as Endangered. Sea turtles suffer from a number of manmade and environmental issues, ranging from poaching, to habitat destruction, to accidental capture, to climate change. So while we can tell you that no turtle has ever been harmed in our campaign, the same thing cannot be said for what is happening in the real world.

We’ve had a lot of fun with our turtle and know, by how our campaign has been received, that network and telecom folks have had fun as well. (After all, we’ve had to reorder our Turtle tees and magnets sets several times!) That being said, we’re also aware of the very real challenges sea turtles face.

This is why we are donating to, and will be an ongoing supporter of, the Sea Turtle Conservancy, the world’s oldest sea turtle research and conservancy group:

“It is the mission of Sea Turtle Conservancy to ensure the survival of sea turtle within the Caribbean, Atlantic and Pacific through research, education, training, advocacy and protection of the natural habitats upon which they depend.”

We want to help ensure that they can thrive in those surroundings so that in the decades to come all of us can continue to enjoy their presence.
